All of the knives you see here are made to order by hand, using the stock removal method one at a time using basic machinery, each from scratch right down to the last thread on the handle fasteners. Heat treatment and leather craft are all done in house - nothing at all is farmed out to others - to ensure full control and sole authorship are maintained.
Form and function are important in a Bayley custom knife - apart from having a distinct look with designer type features, they have a feel in the hand, are light and lively to use and a built in balance. All this whilst at the same time keeping the edge, point and dorsal as strong as possible, using a well proven and exceptionally strong method of assembly. The result is a knife I personally guarantee to give years of pleasure and service.
The steel I use is always RWL a modern powder metallurgy steel that has a fine grain and
carbide structure after a specific heat treatment calculated to get the best overall
performance from the steel by An Interrupted quenching and multiple tempering technique
to give hardness in the aim of 60rc. As a cost option patterned Damasteel can be offered
for something very special both of these steels are specifically made for knife blades,
chosen because they sharpen well and hold a strong fine edge.
The blades are of a full tang construction slotted to reduce weight and keep rigidity,
leading to a good flat dorsal area. The primary bevels are flat ground for durability at
an angle acute enough to work well in all cutting mediums. Note the stylized choil area
that brings the cutting edge close to the handle for maximum leverage all blades are
proof tested in shop before assembly.
The handle material is micarta™ as standard used for its strength and fine textured feel that gives a good grip, or as a cost option desert iron wood burr is offered when available because of its natural durability and beauty. Textured G10 is used on specific models where maximum grip is needed. A special toughened epoxy adhesive with a combined coupling agent is used as an adherent all fittings are stainless steel.
The handle assembly of the proven full tang type, slotted to allow adhesive flow through
locking the whole assembly as one this takes all the divergence of the mechanical fasteners
which are hand made tubular bolts doubling as a thong tube, and threaded bushes that
clamp the adhered scales firmly on to the sand blasted slotted tang. A full one piece
solder less guard is a standard feature constructed to be part of the handle as it
combines with the adhesive, technically removing cleavage or peel forces from acting upon
the handle to blade union. Finally it is all sculpted to shape featuring side grilles that
act as additional gripping elements.
The sheathes are all hand made from high grade vegetable tanned leather in natural ,
brown or black finishes with double over locked stitching. The different models come with
the illustrated sheaths as standard but I offer a full pouch type as an option with
any model if preferred, I can sometimes offer various or custom designs as a cost
option. All are fully welted at a robust ½ inch thick giving high quality traditional
protection for the knife. Also secure detainment is always a primary consideration to
minimise possible loss.
